Choosing the Past.
Usually, we think the past is “Set in stone.” What happened yesterday cannot be changed by what we do today. But John Wheeler, a pioneer of modern physics, proposed a thought experiment that challenged this.
He suggested that a particle (like a photon) could pass through a galaxy billions of light-years away. We can choose now how to measure that photon when it arrives on Earth. Our choice now determines whether that photon traveled like a wave (on both sides of the galaxy) or like a particle (on one side) billions of years ago.
It was proven true in 2007. It matters because it proves that the universe is not a machine running on a fixed track. History is a “Superposition” of possibilities that is only finalized when a witness looks at it. We are “Participants” in making the past real.
