THE PROBLEM
Two coherence measures exist:
- Φ (Integrated Information): Individual neural integration
- χ (Social Coherence): Aggregate social integration
How do they connect? Is χ just average Φ? Or something more?
THE NAIVE MODEL (Insufficient)
χ_naive = (1/N) Σⱼ Φⱼ
This says: Social coherence = average individual coherence.
Problem: A million integrated individuals in isolation have high average Φ but LOW social coherence. They’re not RELATING.
Example:
- Hermits in separate caves: High Φ each, zero χ together
- Dysfunctional family: Mid Φ each, negative interactions, low χ
THE RELATIONAL MODEL (Our Proposal)
χ = (1/N) Σⱼ Φⱼ · (1 + Σₖ Rⱼₖ · Φₖ)
Where:
- Φⱼ = Individual j’s integrated information
- Rⱼₖ = Relational coupling coefficient between j and k
- Range: Rⱼₖ ∈ [-1, +1]
- +1 = Perfect positive coupling (love, trust, cooperation)
- 0 = No relationship
- -1 = Antagonistic coupling (conflict, exploitation)
In matrix form:
χ = (1/N) Φᵀ(I + R)Φ
Where:
- Φ = Vector of individual Φ values
- I = Identity matrix
- R = Relational coupling matrix
IMPLICATIONS
Case 1: Isolated Individuals (R = 0)
χ = (1/N) ΦᵀIΦ = (1/N) Σⱼ Φⱼ²
Social coherence is just sum of squared individual coherences. No relational boost.
Case 2: Perfectly Cooperative Society (R = +1 everywhere)
χ = (1/N) Φᵀ(I + 1·1ᵀ)Φ = (1/N)[Σⱼ Φⱼ² + (Σⱼ Φⱼ)²]
The cross-term (Σⱼ Φⱼ)² MASSIVELY amplifies χ when individuals relate positively.
Case 3: Conflicted Society (R = -1 in some pairs)
χ < (1/N) Σⱼ Φⱼ²
Negative R terms SUBTRACT from χ. Conflict destroys social coherence even if individuals are internally integrated.
THE FRUITS DECOMPOSITION
The 9 Fruits of the Spirit map to both Φ components and R components:
| Fruit | Φ Component (Individual) | R Component (Relational) |
|---|---|---|
| Love | Self-acceptance | Positive coupling to others |
| Joy | Emotional integration | Shared positive affect |
| Peace | Internal calm | Conflict absence |
| Patience | Temporal integration | Tolerance of others |
| Kindness | Virtue integration | Prosocial behavior |
| Goodness | Moral integration | Trust generation |
| Faithfulness | Commitment stability | Relational durability |
| Gentleness | Impulse integration | Non-aggression |
| Self-control | Will-action alignment | Predictability to others |
Each Fruit contributes to BOTH individual Φ AND relational R.
THE DYNAMICS
Individual Φ Evolution:
dΦⱼ/dt = -λΦⱼ + Gⱼ(t) - Σᵢ δ(t - tᵢ)·ΔΦᵢ
Where:
- λ = Natural decay (entropy)
- G = Grace events (external perturbation)
- ΔΦᵢ = Shocks from trauma/constraint removal
Relational R Evolution:
dRⱼₖ/dt = α·Iⱼₖ(t) - β·Cⱼₖ(t) - γ·(Rⱼₖ - R₀)
Where:
- Iⱼₖ = Positive interaction rate
- Cⱼₖ = Conflict rate
- R₀ = Baseline relational state
- α, β, γ = Rate constants
Social χ Evolution (from the above):
dχ/dt = (2/N) Σⱼ Φⱼ · dΦⱼ/dt · (1 + Σₖ Rⱼₖ · Φₖ) + (1/N) Σⱼ Φⱼ² · Σₖ (dRⱼₖ/dt · Φₖ + Rⱼₖ · dΦₖ/dt)
Simplified insight: Social coherence changes when:
- Individual integration changes (dΦ/dt terms)
- Relationships change (dR/dt terms)
- The interaction between them (cross-terms)
THE PHASE TRANSITION
At Individual Level:
Φ → 0 when stress > Φ_crit
(Dissociation, breakdown, addiction spiral)
At Social Level:
χ → 0 when P < Pc
Where P = constraint pressure, Pc = critical threshold
The 1968-1973 Event:
Multiple constraint removals dropped P below Pc:
- Each Hᵢ(t-tᵢ) term in χ(t) = χ₀ · exp(-λt) · ∏ᵢ[1 - Hᵢ(t-tᵢ)] activated
- Cumulative effect: P crossed Pc
- Phase transition: χ collapsed across all domains simultaneously
- Evidence: R̄ = 0.73 correlation, 5.7σ
THE GRACE MECHANISM
At Individual Level:
Φ(t) = Φ₋ + ΔΦ_grace · H(t - t_grace)
Grace event at t_grace injects ΔΦ_grace into the system.
Mechanism: External perturbation provides energy to escape deep attractor well.
At Social Level:
χ(t) = χ₋ + ∫ G(τ) · K(t-τ) dτ
Where K(t-τ) is the propagation kernel (how grace spreads through the relational network).
Insight: Grace at individual level (conversion) propagates through R matrix to affect social χ. One transformed person can shift the coherence of their relational cluster.
TESTABLE PREDICTIONS FROM THE BRIDGE
Prediction B1: Relational Quality Predicts χ Beyond Average Φ
- Test: Measure individual Φ (HRV, EEG coherence) AND relational quality (trust surveys, conflict rates) in communities
- Prediction: R² for χ ~ f(Φ, R) significantly exceeds R² for χ ~ f(Φ alone)
- Falsification: If relational term adds no predictive power → reject relational model
Prediction B2: Grace Propagation Follows Network Structure
- Test: Track conversion events and subsequent Φ/R changes in relational network
- Prediction: Φ changes in converted person propagate to 1st and 2nd degree connections with decay
- Falsification: If no network propagation → grace is purely individual phenomenon
Prediction B3: Isolated High-Φ Communities Have Lower χ Than Connected Mid-Φ Communities
- Test: Compare χ in isolated contemplative communities vs. interconnected but less integrated communities
- Prediction: Relational density compensates for lower individual Φ
- Falsification: If individual Φ always dominates → reject relational model
CONCLUSION
The bridge between Φ and χ is the relational matrix R.
χ = (1/N) Φᵀ(I + R)Φ
This explains:
- Why a society of integrated individuals can still collapse (R degrades)
- Why constraint removal causes simultaneous multi-domain failure (R and Φ coupled)
- Why grace at individual level can propagate to social transformation (R propagation)
- Why the Amish maintain χ (both Φ and R preserved by constraints)
The mathematics are precise. The predictions are testable. The framework is unified.
