I Transformation – Acceleration into True Freedom

When a rocket launches, achieving escape velocity is not instantaneous – it requires sustained acceleration. In the Christian life, transformation is that ongoing acceleration. The moment we trust in Christ, the “engines” ignite – we are a new creation, freed from condemnation. But we are not yet in full orbit; we are being changed _“from one degree of glory to another”_

as we continue heavenward. The Bible calls this process sanctification or spiritual growth. It’s akin to a spacecraft continually increasing speed, breaking through one barrier after another. **“We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another”**

. Notice the phrase “from…glory to…glory” – an ever-ascending trajectory. Each day the Holy Spirit works in us to make us more like Jesus (the ultimate goal and “orbit” of our journey). Our love, joy, peace, and holiness deepen over time, as the Spirit accelerates our growth. Like a rocket, there might be stages – bursts of quick growth and periods of steady thrust – but the direction under God’s power is always upward.

This transformational acceleration requires our cooperation (just as astronauts must stay the course and not abort the mission). Paul urges believers to “walk in the Spirit” so they will not gratify the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). To walk implies ongoing, step-by-step movement – we deliberately shed old habits and adopt new, godly ones, empowered by the Spirit. Colossians 3:9-10 describes it as taking off the old self and putting on the new self, “which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” As we renew our minds in God’s Word and keep our eyes on Christ, the Spirit continually boosts us. Our tastes change, our thinking shifts, and our actions begin to reflect Christ’s character. This is spiritual acceleration. In practical terms, maybe a year ago you struggled heavily with anger or lust, but now you find those forces weakening – you’ve gained speed in the other direction, towards self-control and purity. Perhaps fear and anxiety used to paralyze you, but now faith and peace dominate more often – you are breaking free. These are signs that the escape velocity has been met and is increasing; you are no longer under sin’s gravity as you once were. You can testify that you “run and are not weary…walk and not faint” because God is continually renewing your strength

One beautiful biblical image of this transformed freedom is the eagle soaring in the sky. Isaiah 40:31 promises that _“they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles”_

. An eagle climbing a thermal current, rising effortlessly heavenward, is a picture of what happens when we hope in God. He lifts us higher and higher, and we gain spiritual endurance (running without weariness). In Christ, we aren’t flapping frantically to escape sin – we are being lifted by the Spirit, catching the winds of grace under our wings. This doesn’t mean we never struggle, but it means the general trend of our life is upward, not downward. Proverbs 4:18 describes it: “the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.” As God’s work in us progresses, our freedom expands and the pull of our old life wanes. We experience what Paul called “the glorious freedom of the children of God” (Romans 8:21). This is the end-goal of spiritual escape velocity: not just a one-time escape, but entrance into a new realm of living above the gravity of sin, walking by the higher law of the Spirit continually.

Carried on Eagles’ Wings – From Bondage to Liberty in Christ

The Old Testament gives a powerful foreshadowing of this spiritual escape in the story of the Exodus. The Israelites were slaves in Egypt, hopelessly bound under Pharaoh’s oppressive rule – a vivid picture of our natural state under sin’s dominion. They could not free themselves; God had to step in with miraculous power. Through the Passover lamb’s blood and the parting of the Red Sea, the Lord brought His people out of slavery by His grace. After their deliverance, God told them, **“You have seen…how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself”**

. This poetic image “on eagles’ wings” shows that it was God’s power carrying them, not their own strength. He lifted them out of Egypt’s “gravity.” Yet the people had a role: they needed to trust God enough to sacrifice the lamb, to mark their doorposts with blood, and to step into the parted sea in faith. In doing so, they experienced a sort of escape velocity – leaving the world of bondage behind and entering a journey toward the Promised Land.

The Exodus illustrates our New Testament salvation. Jesus is our Passover Lamb whose blood sets us free from judgment. By faith we apply His blood to our lives, and by God’s mighty hand we walk out of our old life. Just as Pharaoh’s armies were drowned in the sea, our old sins and the enemy’s claims on us are cut off when we pass through the waters of baptism (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:1-2). We emerge as a free people, no longer slaves to sin. Romans 6:17-18 joyfully declares that “you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart… and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.” The law of sin that held us is broken, and we come under a new gracious Master, God Himself. Like Israel, though, we journey and undergo transformation in the “wilderness” of this life. God teaches us reliance on Him, just as He provided manna from heaven and guided Israel with His presence. When Israel doubted and yearned for Egypt, it’s akin to a believer feeling the tug of old habits – but God calls us to press forward and not turn back. Ultimately, the goal is to reach the “promised land” of full freedom in God’s presence. In Christ, that ultimate freedom is eternal life, where sin’s gravity will be gone for good. But even now, we taste that freedom. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free,” Paul writes; “stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1). In other words, don’t drift back under gravity when Christ has enabled you to fly!

The concept of spiritual escape velocity beautifully glorifies the message of Romans 8:1-2. It shows that our freedom is thoroughly God’s doing. He designed the plan of salvation (the rocket), He provides the power (fuel/grace), and He even gifts us the faith to get on board. We simply say yes and hang on! And once we are in Christ, there is “no condemnation” left to weigh us down

, just as the laws of thrust and aerodynamics overcome gravity’s pull. This is not just theology; it’s experiential reality for every believer. Many could testify how addictions were broken, despair turned to hope, and a life heading downward was turned around. The gravity of sinful habits and mindsets was powerfully countered by God’s love and Spirit. As we continue in faith, God’s grace keeps boosting us when we falter, adjusting our course, and accelerating our growth. Our part is to keep looking to Jesus and walking by the Spirit day by day.

In summary, the Bible’s deepest wisdom on this topic is that true freedom comes from a power beyond ourselves. Human effort alone can’t escape sin’s pull, but through Christ, God has established a new law that sets us free. Faith in Christ is the trusting thrust that initiates our escape. Grace is the constant divine force lifting us upward. Transformation is the ongoing acceleration, as we shed the weight of the old self and rise to the new life. And all of this is grounded in God’s unchanging truth: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). We are truly free – free to know God, free to love others, free to rise above what once enslaved us. Like an eagle on the wind or a rocket in the heavens, we find ourselves carried by a power far greater than us, “brought to God” on eagles’ wings

. The law of sin may have been strong, but the law of the Spirit of life is stronger still – lifting us into the glorious freedom found in Christ alone.
