HC.3 — Observer Capacity (Integrated Information)
IRON CHAIN POSITION: 56 of 67 This axiom integrates Tononi’s Integrated Information Theory (IIT) into the Logos framework.
Ring 2 — Canonical Grounding
- TH Consciousness Integrated Information Theory (Tononi)
- Integrated Information Theory (Tononi)
- Integrated Information Theory
Ring 3 — Framework Connections
Formal Statement
Consciousness provides the Integrated Information (Φ) required to couple to the Logos Field and achieve “Receiver Status.”
Type Classification
🔵 Schema — It identifies the measurable metric of consciousness intensity. Not all consciousness is equal; it admits degrees.
The “Phi” Metric
Following the work of Giulio Tononi, we define Φ as the irreducibility of an information network.
- High Φ (Human): High conceptual interconnectivity; powerful coupling to the $\chi$-field.
- Low Φ (AI/Simple Organism): Low interconnectivity; weak coupling.
Theophysics Extension: Φ is not the cause of consciousness, but the tuning of the receiver. Higher Φ allows for a higher-resolution “compile” of reality (HO.2).
Defeat Conditions
This axiom fails if:
-
High-Φ systems are shown to be consistently unconscious
- e.g., a massive lookup table with infinite connections but zero awareness
-
Consciousness is found in systems with zero integration
- e.g., isolated bits of information possessing individual qualia
Domain Manifestations
| Domain | Expression |
|---|---|
| Information Theory | Mutual information between system states. |
| Neuroscience | Phase-locking and functional connectivity. |
| Artificial Intelligence | The threshold for “awakening” ($Φ > 0.7$). |
The Logic Chain
- Moral Agency (HC.2)
- Observer Capacity (HC.3) (this axiom)
- Higher capacity leads to active participation.
- Participatory Consciousness (HC.4)
