THE CLAIM

Faith is the coupling mechanism (g > 0) that allows grace to operate on you. Without faith, grace is offered but not received. Faith is not a work—it is the opening that allows the external operator to act.

Graceis sufficient, but it must be received. Faith is the reception mechanism—the coupling constant that determines whether grace connects or not. g = 0 means grace is blocked; g > 0 means grace is received.

”What about those who refuse?"	"No one ultimately refuses…”	Then free will is an illusion. But you exercise free will in arguing this.
”Is hell empty?"	"God wouldn’t allow eternal suffering…”	You’re telling God what He can allow. That’s presumption, not theology.

THE COERCION TRAP:

Universalism: All are saved regardless of response
But: Response-less salvation is coerced salvation
Coerced love is not love
God is love → God does not coerce
∴ Response matters
∴ Universalism makes God a coercer

VERDICT: GUILTY of making love coercive.

Against Automatic Salvation

CHARGE: Automatic Salvation claims “grace applies automatically—no human response required.”

CROSS-EXAMINATION:

Q	A	Trap
”Why did Jesus say ‘believe’?"	"It’s descriptive, not prescriptive…”	Every gospel command presupposes human response. Remove response, remove the command structure.
”Why are some saved and some not?"	"God’s choice alone…”	Then God is arbitrary. But Scripture says God desires all to be saved (1 Tim 2:4).
”What is faith for?"	"Acknowledgment, not reception…”	If grace doesn’t require faith to operate, why does Scripture repeatedly link faith and salvation?

THE COMMAND TRAP:

Automatic Salvation: No response needed
But: Scripture commands: "Believe" (Acts 16:31)
Commands presuppose capacity and necessity to respond
If response unnecessary, commands are pointless
Commands are not pointless
∴ Response is necessary
∴ Automatic salvation misreads Scripture

VERDICT: GUILTY of rendering biblical commands meaningless.

Against Fideism

CHARGE: Fideism claims “faith is a leap into the dark—believe against evidence, against reason.”

”What are you believing?"	"I don’t need to know exactly…”	But faith has content. Trust in nothing is not faith—it’s wishful thinking.
”Is blind faith praiseworthy?"	"Trusting without evidence shows devotion…”	But credulity is not a virtue. You wouldn’t praise blind faith in a con artist.
”Can faith be evaluated?"	"That would undermine faith…”	If faith can’t be evaluated, how do you know you have it? How do you distinguish faith from delusion?

THE CONTENT TRAP:

Fideism: Faith is contentless trust
But: Biblical faith has an object (Christ)
Faith is "in" something or someone
Contentless faith is not Biblical faith
∴ Faith requires content
∴ Fideism misdefines faith

VERDICT: GUILTY of divorcing faith from its proper object.

2. Positive Coupling Enables Reception (R3.2)

When g > 0, grace becomes effective in your life.

3. Zero Coupling Blocks Grace (R3.3)

g = 0 means grace cannot operate—not because grace is weak, but because reception is closed.

4. Faith Is Trust, Not Works (R3.4)

Faith is not something you do TO earn grace—it’s something you do that RECEIVES grace.

Biblical faith is not vague feeling—it has a specific object: Christ.

Faith ≠ "spiritual" sensibility
Faith ≠ absence of doubt

Why content matters:

You can have faith in the wrong object
Faith in a lie doesn’t save
Faith must be properly directed
Christ is the proper object

6. Faith and Works: The Order

Works flow FROM faith, not TOWARD salvation.

"Faith without works is dead" means:

This axiom set fails if:

Faith is unnecessary
- But Scripture commands it repeatedly
- Jesus said “believe in me”
- Faith is the consistent biblical requirement
- Necessity is established
Grace operates without faith
- But “grace through faith” is the formula (Eph 2:8)
- Without faith, grace is offered but not received

Faith is a work
- But faith is reception, not achievement

SCRIPTURE

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8

Grace saves; faith is the channel. Both are gift.

The command to believe presupposes faith’s necessity.

This is the thirtieth good news: Faith is not a great achievement you must accomplish. It is simply saying “yes” to what God offers. The smallest yes opens the door to infinite grace. You don’t need perfect faith—you need faith in a perfect Savior. The power is in Him, not in you. Your mustard seed is enough.
