title: "Information is Fundamental"
axioms: [003, 005, 006, 007]
axiom_ids: [P0.3, O1.1, O1.2, O1.3]
tier: 1
case_file: CF02, CF03
defendants: [Materialism, Physicalism, Reductive Naturalism]
priority: CRITICAL
status: IN_PROGRESSTHE CLAIM
Information is ontologically prior to matter. “It from Bit” is literally true.
This is IRON CHAIN POSITION: 3-4 of 11. Having established existence and distinction, we now identify that distinguishability IS information.
AXIOMS COVERED
| # | ID | Statement | Mathematical Form |
|---|---|---|---|
| 003 | P0.3 | Distinguishability IS information | H(X) = -Σ p(x) log p(x) |
| 005 | O1.1 | Information requires a substrate | χ = ∫(G·K)dΩ |
| 006 | O1.2 | The fundamental substrate must be self-instantiating | χ(χ) = χ |
| 007 | O1.3 | Information cannot be created or destroyed | ∂I/∂t = 0 (conservation) |
THE PROSECUTION
Against Materialism
CHARGE: Materialism claims “matter is fundamental, information is derivative.”
CROSS-EXAMINATION:
| Q | A | Trap |
|---|---|---|
| ”What is matter made of?" | "Atoms, particles…” | And what are particles? |
| ”What are particles?" | "Excitations in quantum fields…” | And what are quantum fields? |
| ”What are quantum fields?" | "Mathematical structures describing…” | Describing what? Information patterns? |
| ”So matter is described BY information?” | [pause] | You’ve inverted the order |
THE INVERSION:
Materialism claims: Matter → Information (matter produces information)
Reality shows: Information → Matter (matter IS information pattern)
VERDICT: GUILTY of inverting the ontological order.
Against Physicalism
CHARGE: Physicalism claims “only physical things exist.”
CROSS-EXAMINATION:
| Q | A | Trap |
|---|---|---|
| ”Is the number 7 physical?" | "No, numbers are abstract…” | Do physics equations use numbers? |
| ”Do physical laws exist?" | "Yes, of course…” | Are laws physical objects? |
| ”Is information physical?" | "It’s just patterns in matter…” | Landauer proved information has energy cost |
LANDAUER’S PRINCIPLE:
Information erasure requires: E ≥ kT ln 2
Information is NOT merely description
Information IS physical (has energy cost)
VERDICT: GUILTY of failing to account for information’s physical reality.
Against Reductive Naturalism
CHARGE: Reductive naturalism claims “everything reduces to physics, physics reduces to matter.”
CROSS-EXAMINATION:
| Q | A | Trap |
|---|---|---|
| ”What does physics study?" | "The behavior of matter and energy…” | Using what tools? |
| ”Mathematics describes physics?" | "Yes, math is the language…” | Is math made of matter? |
| ”Where does the math come from?" | "It’s discovered, not invented…” | Then it exists prior to matter |
THE REGRESS:
Physics → Mathematics → Logic → Information → ?
The chain terminates at: Self-grounding information substrate (χ)
VERDICT: GUILTY of incomplete reduction.
KEY ARGUMENTS
1. The Definitional Identity
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Information | That which distinguishes one state from another |
| Distinguishability | The property of being different from something else |
| Identity | Information ≡ Distinguishability |
This is not a claim about what information “really is” in some deep metaphysical sense. It is a recognition that the two concepts are co-extensive.
2. Wheeler’s “It from Bit”
John Archibald Wheeler (1990):
“Every ‘it’—every particle, every field of force, even the space-time continuum itself—derives its function, its meaning, its very existence entirely from binary choices, bits. ‘It from bit.‘”
Wheeler was not being poetic. He was stating the physics:
- Particles are distinguished by quantum numbers (bits)
- Fields are distinguished by values at points (bits)
- Spacetime is distinguished by coordinates (bits)
Matter does not carry information. Matter IS information.
3. The Substrate Requirement (O1.1)
Information cannot float free. It must be instantiated in something.
| Option | Problem |
|---|---|
| Information floats free (pure Platonism) | How do abstract forms cause concrete effects? No mechanism. |
| Information is “in” matter | But matter is derived from information. Circular. |
| Information is “in” minds | But minds emerge later. Can’t be foundational. |
Resolution: There must be a substrate that carries information but is not itself derived from something more fundamental. This substrate is χ (the Logos Field).
4. Self-Grounding (O1.2)
The substrate cannot regress infinitely:
| Option | Description | Problem |
|---|---|---|
| Infinite Regress | A grounded in B, B in C, C in D… forever | Never reaches foundation |
| Brute Fact | A just exists, no reason | Arbitrary |
| Self-Grounding | A grounds itself: A(A) = A | Tight, generative circle |
We choose self-grounding because:
- It terminates the regress
- It is not arbitrary (the structure explains why this and not that)
- The “circularity” is productive, not vicious
χ(χ) = χ — The Logos Field grounds itself.
5. Information Conservation (O1.3)
Information cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.
Black Hole Information Paradox: Hawking radiation appeared to destroy information. Resolution: Information is preserved on the horizon (holographic principle). This confirms O1.3.
DEFEAT CONDITIONS
This axiom set fails if:
-
Matter/energy can be shown as ontologically prior to information
- This requires showing matter without any distinguishing properties
- But “without distinguishing properties” = nothing
- Self-refuting
-
Distinguishability can exist without information
- But “distinguishability” and “information” are definitionally identical
- Denying this is denying the meaning of words
-
Information is merely epistemic (in the mind) not ontic (in reality)
- But distinctions exist whether or not anyone observes them
- The electron’s spin is ±½ whether or not we measure it
Status: All defeat conditions reduce to definitional contradictions or empirical falsehoods.
DEFENSE GRID
| Attack Vector | Response | Status |
|---|---|---|
| ”Information requires a mind to interpret it” | No—that’s meaning. Information is distinction, which is observer-independent. | ✅ Blocked |
| ”Matter is fundamental, information is a description of matter” | Descriptions require distinctions. Distinctions are information. You’ve inverted the order. | ✅ Blocked |
| ”This is just semantic wordplay” | No—it’s recognizing that physics is already information-theoretic. We’re naming what’s already there. | ✅ Blocked |
| ”Quantum mechanics uses wavefunctions, not bits” | Wavefunctions encode which states are distinguishable. That’s information. | ✅ Blocked |
| ”This is idealism” | No—idealism says mind is primary. We say information is primary. Mind comes later. | ✅ Blocked |
| ”Self-grounding is circular” | Yes. But the circle is tight and generative. Vicious circles are bad; virtuous circles are foundations. | ✅ Addressed |
EQUATIONS / FORMALISM
Shannon Entropy
H(X) = -Σ p(x) log p(x)
Measures the information content of a probability distribution.
Logos Field Definition
χ = ∫(G·K)dΩ
Where G = generator, K = structure, Ω = configuration space.
Self-Grounding
χ(χ) = χ
The Logos Field instantiates itself.
Information Conservation
∂I_total/∂t = 0
Total information is conserved in any closed system.
Landauer’s Principle
E_erasure ≥ kT ln 2
Information erasure requires minimum energy—information is physical.
CONNECTION TO PHYSICS
| Physical Theory | Information-Theoretic Reading |
|---|---|
| Quantum Mechanics | States are vectors in information space (Hilbert space) |
| Thermodynamics | Entropy = information about microstates |
| Black Hole Physics | Bekenstein-Hawking entropy = information on horizon |
| Quantum Gravity | Holographic principle = bulk information encoded on boundary |
| Quantum Computing | Qubits = fundamental units of quantum information |
Modern physics is already information physics. We are not adding something foreign—we are making explicit what is already implicit.
SCRIPTURE
“In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God.” — John 1:1
Logos (λόγος) means:
- Word (information carrier)
- Reason (information processor)
- Order (information structure)
The claim that information is primordial is not imported from theology. But it is confirmed by theology. Physics and theology converge on the same foundation.
“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” — Hebrews 11:3
The visible (matter) was made from the invisible (information/Logos).
“He upholds the universe by the word of his power.” — Hebrews 1:3
The universe is not self-sustaining matter. It is sustained by information (Logos).
THE VERDICT
GUILTY
Materialism, Physicalism, and Reductive Naturalism are found GUILTY of inverting the ontological order.
- Materialism cannot explain what matter is made of without appealing to information
- Physicalism cannot account for the mathematical/informational structure of physics
- Reductive Naturalism cannot complete its reduction without terminating in information
These worldviews may continue to study material phenomena, but they cannot claim that matter is fundamental. Matter is derivative. Information is primary.
IT FROM BIT. THE CHAIN HOLDS.
THE LOVE (What You Gain)
L1.2 — You Are Known
If information is fundamental, then:
- Your pattern is not reducible to “mere matter”
- Your identity is informational, not just physical
- You can be known completely by One who knows all information
The Logos that grounds all information knows YOUR information. You are not anonymous matter. You are a pattern in the mind of God—known, named, and loved.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” — Jeremiah 1:5
To be known is to have your information held in the information substrate itself. You are not lost in a material void. You are held in the Logos.
This is the second good news: You are known. And to be known is to be loved.
