P5.1 - The Information of Self
Premise: A “self” can be modeled as a conserved informational pattern with continuity and identity constraints.
One-sentence version
If a person remains the same person over time, there is an invariance (a conserved pattern) that persists through change.
The Paper (Narrative)
Everyone knows they change. Few people notice how strange it is that they still say “I.”
- Your body replaces cells.
- Your thoughts change.
- Your memories degrade.
- Your beliefs shift.
And yet, there is still a stable reference: “me.” We treat identity as obvious, but it is one of the most non-trivial facts in human life.
This paper makes a modest move:
If identity is real, then there is something about a person that behaves like a conserved pattern.
Not conserved in the naive sense that nothing changes, but conserved in the deeper sense that change happens around a stable core.
1) Continuity vs identity
Continuity answers: “Is this the same stream?” Identity answers: “Is this the same self?”
A river can be continuous while not being the same water. A person can be continuous while not having the same moods. The project uses soul-field language (Psi_S / Ψ_S in the axioms) as a way to talk about the minimal “identity carrier”.
2) Why this is not just theology
You do not need to accept an afterlife to admit identity persistence is a structural question.
Any worldview that talks about responsibility, love, repentance, forgiveness, or growth already treats the self as more than a momentary blur.
So the framework formalizes that commitment:
- there is a substrate for consciousness,
- and there is a conservation principle for identity.
That sets up the next moves: morality, outcomes, and the shape of redemption.
What This Paper Is Not Claiming
- It is not “proving” immortality in this paper.
- It is not claiming the self is pure information detached from any substrate.
- It is not defining all details of the soul field; it is establishing the need for an identity carrier.
